Description
Melittin is a research peptide studied for its ability to target cancer cells (e.g., breast cancer), though its non-specific toxicity necessitates specialized delivery systems like nanoparticles. Melittin is derived from Apis Mellifera (Honeybee) is the main component of bee venom. When a bee is infected, Melittin is also expressed in other bee tissues indicating a role in immune response against infections. Melittin acts as an anti-coagulant, it inhibits the activity of S100 calcium-binding protein B and plays a role in Epilepsy treatment. It has been shown to inhibit the lyme disease spirochete. The amino acid sequence of Melittin has been characterized from four species within the genus Apis: A. mellifera, A. cerana, A. dorsata, and A. florea.
